The Journey From Moses to Mary

Two of my favorite bible characters are Moses and Mary, and I think we all have a little bit of Moses and Mary inside of us.

You see, Moses was fearful, struggling with doubt about the mission God had given him to carry out. He protested and pleaded with God throughout two chapters of Exodus. Check out what he said to God in these verses.

But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?”....But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” ….. But Moses protested again, “What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?”.....  But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.”

-Exodus 3:11,13, 4:1,10 (NLT)

As you can see, he was full of excuses and definitely had a bleak outlook about this task God was asking him to take on. Moses washed so consumed with the how that he forgot the who!

Meanwhile, it is easy to imagine Mary had some fear about her predicament. But the difference was that she knew who God was and who she was to Him. Notice the contrast in her interaction with the angel in these verses.

Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” …..Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.”

-Luke 1:34, 38 (NLT)

She simply asked one question and then she made a decision to adopt a posture of surrender to what the Lord was going to do in her life.

The interesting thing about this faith journey is that we will have countless opportunities to experience fear and doubt from our teenage years (Mary), all the way up to our golden years (Moses). But my prayer is that when all is said and done, we all get closer to Mary's heart posture.
