Glorifying God With Our Food

July 13, 2022 THE MMA TEAM

If you are anything like me, you have been on a weight loss journey for longer than you care to admit. You have tried several different diets, exercise plans and lifestyle changes. Some were promising and some not so much. You may have had moderate or even major success, but it was temporary. I have tried every weight loss trick under the sun and it was only recently that I had a much-needed paradigm shift that I would like to share with you.

As Christians, we sometimes compartmentalize our relationship with Christ. We sometimes don’t factor Christ or biblical principles into every area of life and every situation.

Sometimes, our first thought isn’t ‘how can I apply scripture to this situation?’ or ‘I should stop and pray about this before I act’. That actually describes me when it comes to weight loss and physical health. For some reason in ten years of trying, it has never struck me to seek our Heavenly Father about this matter.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

This scripture was taken from a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church at Corinth. He is explaining to the church that for the sake of unity, we shouldn’t allow division to occur over the nuances of the cultural or personal practices we utilize to worship God. We should take care not to be a stumbling block for a fellow Christian, but whatever we decide to do, do it to the glory of God.

Doing something to the glory of God, is prioritizing His way over any other way (our way, the worlds way, etc…). If we apply this principle to our lives, so many areas would come into alignment with God’s will for us.

If we handled our finances to the glory of God, we would have all the provision we need because He is our provider.

If we behaved in our relationships to the glory of God, we would have so much peace because He is the originator of peace.

If we lived our entire lives to the glory of God, we would experience joy because He promises us this.

So, if we diet and exercise to the glory of God, we would have health abundantly because He promises us life abundantly.

In Genesis 1:29-30, right after God created man, He gave us plants and animals to eat. God called this “good”.

Food is not inherently bad. In fact, if God called it good, and He did, then it is inherently good. We must utilize it to the glory of God.

Overeating, is not glorifying God. Overprocessing it, is not glorifying God. Hoarding it is not glorifying God. I’m not advocating for any particular diet choice here. I am suggesting we mindfully and intentionally eat to the glory of God.

Eating can and has been a time of both fellowship and worship to God. There are examples all throughout the bible of this.

If we look at how we celebrate holidays, this is rooted in biblical practice.  As a society we have moved away from the worship opportunity sharing a meal with others provides. Instead, we eat in front of the TV, scroll on the smartphone, eat in the car while on the go, or by ourselves even though we live with a house full of people.

Meal time is an opportunity to slow down and reflect on the goodness of God, to thank Him for our provision and to fellowship with one another

I propose that we become intentional about our eating and living to the glory of God! Invite God into every area of your life and enjoy the abundance that He promises us in His word! May God bless you, and may you glorify Him!
